Descartes' first philosophy was called Meditations on First Philosophy. It was originally written in Latin, but was later translated into French. Descartes, in his treatise, proved that God exists and that the soul is immortal. The first publication of the work in Latin was in 1641. It wasn't until 1647, however, that it was available in English. Descartes' ideas, despite their popularity, are generally unpopular today.

Rene Descartes in France wrote the first meditation. He had studied the ideas of Aristotle and was unable to accept them. He tried to come up with a better explanation of his ideas. He then asks his self if existence can be defined as perfection. This question doesn't answer the question, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Mihali's introduction challenges the traditional interpretation of Descartes' work. She claims that Descartes' arguments are not circular.
