Milton Hyland Erickson is a psychiatrist or psychologist that specialized in family therapy, medical hypnosis, and psychotherapy. His theories are still widely used today. In his 1960 book, Hypnosis & the Family, he provides practical advice on how to use Hypnosis as a tool to help people solve conflicts. Milton Erickson, a Wisconsin farmer from humble beginnings, was born to a polio-prone family. He contracted the disease again at 51 and was completely paralyzed. The disease left him color-blind and tone-deaf. He was also dyslexic and colour-blind. In 1950, the American Medical Association tried unsuccessfully to revoke him his license. Despite his difficulties, his life was a testimony to perseverance.




Erickson's work was significant, but there was one problem. Erickson relied instead on patient behavior to induce the trance, rather than using hypnosis techniques that are based on unconscious thoughts. To establish rapport, Erickson emphasized the facial expressions and body language of his patients. This helped him induce a hypnotic sleep state in his patients. His method of treatment was also highly effective in treating post-polio syndrome.

While many hypnosis techniques are still based on the same ideas, the basic principle of Erickson's approach is the same. It is important to understand how the unconscious mind works.
