Yoga in America: Who brought Yoga to the West?

Yoga in America has a rich past. The practice started as a slow-growing tradition that only the wealthy could afford. Over the years, it has become an increasingly popular fitness regimen with a strong spiritual component. Yoga is now affordable for everyone, regardless of their budget. The word yoga is derived from Sanskrit and means "union." The ultimate goal of yoga practice is to unite the individual with the supreme self.

The early 1960s saw very little yoga being taught in America. This was due in large part to a 40-year-old immigration law that barred Indians from immigrating to the U.S. It was passed by West Coast union leaders to keep Indians and other Asians from coming to the United States. As a result, a surge of gurus began to emerge in the 1970s. There were many Indians who lived in the United States.

Sarah Farmer, the first Westside yoga practitioner, was it? Swami Vivekananda was a friend she made while attending Green Acre's conferences. They conceived a plan to invite Swami Vivekananda to America. Sara Bull and Haridas Chaudhuri also met, having been sent by Sri Aurobindo to the U.S. The women started teaching each other yoga in early 1970s.

Swami Vivekananda was a Westerner who had been trained in India and brought yoga to the United States. In the early 1890s he introduced American citizens to Hatha Yoga. The popularity of this form yoga grew and more Indian gurus arrived in America to bring new forms of yoga.

In the 1930s, yoga was first practiced in India, but it was not widespread in the United States until the 1970s, when Hollywood actors such as Aldous Huxley and Charlie Chaplin took an interest in it. The rise of posture-based yoga was the catalyst for yoga's rise in America during the middle of the 20th century. In the late twentieth century, the Indian traditions of hatha yoga merged with Western physical culture. Swami Kuvalayananda, along with other American yogis, established the practice as a medical science. This gave it a mainstream foundation.

Despite the fact that yoga has a long history, it wasn't the United States that achieved its first major success. Americans were unaware of the form until the 1950s. The era of yoga's growth in the west was characterized by a wide range of practitioners. A popular group of yogis, such as Sivananda and Desikachar, were among the first to bring the guru's teachings to the U.S.
