Yoga Philosophy - A Guide to Patanjali, Ashtanga, and Raja Yoga

You may have wondered about yoga's origins and the different schools of thought that influenced it. This article will introduce some of the main schools, including Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, Ashtanga yoga, and Raja yoga. Modern science is able to recognize the basic principles in each school. This article should help clarify how yoga differs from other forms of exercise.

Patanjali

The Yogasootra is a classical work about yoga that was written by Patanjali (a Hindu sage). It is composed of 185 terse quotes and divided into four sections: Samaadhi (the powers of the yogi) and the state absolution. However, there are many differences among the Sootras. The three Sootras that focus on aasanas are the most important, while the two remaining ones focus on meditation.

The Sanskrit word AASTEYA means "not stealing." Buddha once said that greed is at the root all suffering. Therefore, yogis try to live harmoniously and purify the mind. They don't accumulate material items and think that it is theft to try to obtain them. Rather, they aim to accumulate the Supreme Spirit - Brahma Tejas - which is their source of fulfillment.

The Bhagavad Gita

The epic poem known as the Bhagavadgita in Indian subcontinent is called "The Bhagavad Gita". It tells about a prince named Arjuna being expelled from Kurukshetra's kingdom for thirteen years and denied his rightful inheritance. The text describes Arjuna’s journey to regain the throne of his kingdom of Kurukshetra, even if it means fighting with his own kinsmen.

Many references to yogic philosophy are found in the Bhagavad Gita. The Gita's opening chapter suggests that the Gita is about devotional worship to the divine. Other sections, however, are pandeistic. Christopher Southgate, Max Bernhard Weinstein and other yogic philosophers see the text as either panentheistic (or deistic) while others view it as neither.

Ashtanga yoga

The eight-limbed Ashtanga path of yoga yoga helps the meditator achieve samadhi. He is in a state where he transcends all of existence. This state is what samadhi, or bliss, is all about. Samadhi happens when a meditation practitioner transcends oneself to experience an extraordinary sense that all is connected. The meditator experiences a deep sense of connection with the Divine and all living things during this state.

Dharana is the idea of fixation. It links all eight limbs in Ashtanga yoga. Dharana (or fixed gaze) is yoga's focus or fixation. Tristhana includes the mind in the practice. It helps increase focus and self awareness. Ashtanga is not easy to practice. It's best to begin slowly with a handful of movements, before you move onto more difficult poses.

Raja yoga

Raja Yoga is a yogic philosophy that focuses on the mind and the way it works. It teaches us about five states of consciousness. These can be called kshipta mudha vikshipta and niruddha. Each state can be described as a different kind of mental activity. By practicing raja Yoga, we can learn to change these states.

The goal of yoga, as a whole, is to achieve a higher state of consciousness, in which the individual is aware of his or her connection to the universe and the divine. This state of consciousness is known as samadhi and is synonymous with pure bliss. Raja Yoga emphasizes the importance and benefits of pranayama, which is controlled breathing, to achieve this goal. Pranayama can be used to prepare the body for the raja meditation.

Tantra yoga

Tantra yoga can be described as an ancient spiritual practice founded on yogic philosophy. This ancient philosophy of body, mind and spirit can bring many benefits to practitioners. Tantra classes may include traditional tantric techniques taught by Indian Gurus. This method emphasizes harmony, beauty, and attention to detail. If you want to learn more about tantra yoga, consider taking a Tantra teacher training course.

Tantra, which comes from the root word, "tantra," is an expression of expanding and weaving. It explores all aspects and sensations of the body and energies. It is believed that it originated in India as a religion around 500 BC. However, it has remained a major belief system for more than a thousand years in different forms. The original focus of tantra lay on the physical, while yoga practice was based upon worship and meditation.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

Patanjali's Yoga Sutra begins with a description of the three nature qualities: sattva (rajas), tamas (tamas). These qualities are present in all things, but only a few of them can be conscious. Purusha is the true Self. Rajas and Tamas are only physical phenomena. The final goal of yoga is samadhi, or pure contemplation. This is when you can separate the self from your body and achieve unity with the universe.

The second chapter introduces five kleshas, which are strange forms of matter. It also explains how to overcome this suffering. It describes the nature and effects of karma. These sutras cannot be understood logically. They are intended to be interpreted according to their spiritual meanings, and the meditative state that they induce.
